Anchor Institutions (BTOP)

Construction crews will begin installing conduit and fiber throughout areas of the city beginning April 18th. The contractor that will be performing the work is  B.Jackson Construction.  Vehicles and equipment should be identified with "UTOPIA" signs.  This phase of the construction is for certain "Anchor institutions" in the City.  (for a map of the areas to be built and the identified anchor institutions click here for a PDF copy    ). 

Centerville city in conjunction with UTOPIA and other UTOPIA cities, made a combined application for a grant to extend fiber optic network through the Federal Governments Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) which was established under the Recovery Act (stimulus). UTOPIA received a grant in the fall of 2010 for just over $16,000,000.  After fulfilling all the requirements to receive funds, work is ready to proceed.  Fiber will be installed to a number of city and other facilities that qualified for grant funding.  This phase will include the installation of facilities that will house the electronics for the network, that include a central hub and 6 cabinet locations. These facilities will serve the network that will provide services to all the residents and businesses in the city in the future.

Will this phase offer service to residents and other businesses? No, not through the grant.  However, service to all residents will be available to residents and businesses soon.  The next phase of the network is expected to begin by mid-summer through UIA.  For more detail on UIA, click here.
