WHITAKER MUSEUM
Prior to the joint work session, members of the Council took a tour of the Whitaker Museum in order to understand the current state of the building and to hear about plans and projects the Museum Board is proposing for the museum.
Paul Smith, Whitaker Museum Board Chair, reviewed the Board’s recommendations for the facility, including capital needs assessment and restoration plans. The Museum Board will continue to work on their fundraising efforts within the community and with local and national endowment groups to help with the proposed projects. The Museum Board is preparing an educational DVD on sera culture and the Whitaker family history that will be made available for purchase. The Whitaker Museum Board is asking for the Council’s approval for a $15,000 budget and to adopt the proposed policies and procedures, mission statement and conceptual approval of the long-range plans.
The Council was provided with a preliminary draft of the policies and procedures the Museum Board is recommending and a draft copy of the physical facilities and maintenance plan that will be a component of the long-range plan. The Council also discussed hiring a consultant with a matching grant to help put all of the proposed ideas into an overall master plan for the Council to consider. The Council agreed that other small projects that do not involve major structural changes could be completed prior to the finalization of the master plan.
Mayor Russell thanked the Museum Board members for their work to prepare the documents that were discussed tonight. The Council watched a short DVD which the Museum Board is in the process of developing.
At 6:45 p.m. the meeting was adjourned.
