INTEROFFICE
MEMORANDUM

Department Heads
From: Steve Thacker, City Manager
Subject: City Manager’s Summary of March 30, 2010 Council Budget Work Session
Date: March 26, 2010
The City Council will meet next Tuesday evening in a Budget Work Session, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be available beginning at 5:15. Two agendas are enclosed—a formal agenda for posting and a more detailed agenda showing the participation of each department head. Please note that the first subject is a review of the City’s new website, which we hope to launch the following week. You can view this while eating dinner. Staff are hoping you will focus at this time on the “look and feel” and functionality of the website, and not get bogged down in the detail of the content. The content can be expanded and otherwise modified over time after the website becomes operational. We have established conceptually the internal framework among the employees for keeping the new website up to date and will explain that further at the work session.
At approximately 6 p.m. I hope we will be able to move on to the budget part of the work session. Blaine will give you his projection of revenues in the coming fiscal year, and will report on the anticipated impact of retirement and health insurance costs on the budget. He will be followed by presentations from each department head. They have been asked to highlight the 3-year projections already given to you in written form, and to comment on your recently adopted goals (expressed in the enclosed minutes) that may have impact on their budget. Bring those documents with you, along with the strategic goals submitted by department heads as a part of your recent goal-setting process. If you have misplaced these documents, please let Marilyn or Marsha know that you need copies. The detailed agenda shows an opportunity at the end for you to give me any pertinent direction relating to the preparation of my Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2010-11, which I must give to you by the May 4 Council meeting. At the end I would also like you to review the enclosed minutes from your recent goal-setting meeting and agree on any changes to that record.
See you next Tuesday evening. Have a great weekend!
