MINUTES REVIEW AND APPROVAL
Minutes of the January 7, 2010 Trails Committee meeting minutes were reviewed. Chair Denise Cox made a motion to approve the minutes as amended. Matt Johnson seconded the motion, which was passed by unanimous vote (3-0). Lee Vanhille abstained from voting, as he was not present at the meeting.
ADOPT-A-TRAIL DISCUSSION AND ASSIGNMENTS
Chair Denise Cox reported she spoke with George Chipman, Farmington Trails Committee Chairman, and he said they have a “Trail Chief.” Their Trail Chiefs look at the trails to see what maintenance needs to be done to make sure they are ready for hikes. The Trails Committee discussed if they should have a “Trail Chief.” The Committee agreed to solicit volunteers on the City website to fulfill this position. Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, said that there are scout groups who occasionally contact him requesting service projects in the community, and he will suggest adopting a trail to maintain as a project. Chair Cox said she will follow up on “Trail Chief” requirements.
REPORT ON BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN’S CONFERENCE
Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, reported he attended the Back Country Horseman’s Conference, and said it was well attended. There were booths and demonstrations on camping gear, how to pack a horse/mule, and maps were distributed showing horse trails in Utah. Mr. Cox said he will work on updating the trails map with equestrian access points. It was agreed to have Bruce Cox ask Spencer Packard, who is a member of the Back Country Horseman’s Club, to attend a future Trails Committee meeting to make recommendations on how to make Centerville’s trails more horse friendly.
Lee Vanhille suggested noting on the map which property is public, and which is private. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail was not clearly marked on the trails map, and will need to be added to the new map.
FOLLOW UP ON SAM’S POSSIBLE 4TH OF JULY BIKE EVENT AND ASSIGNMENTS
Chair Cox reported that Sam Olsen previously suggested having a family bike ride in conjunction with the 5k race on July 4th. The Committee discussed if a family bike ride would be too much competition with the other activities occurring on July 4th, and they agreed that the family bike ride will be held on May 22nd on 400 West beginning at 9:00 a.m. It was suggested having snow cone vendors along the route, an obstacle course, and bike safety classes from the Police Department. Matt Johnson will contact Sam Olsen so that he can begin preparations for this event.
TRAIL MAP BOOK AND INTERACTIVE VIRTUAL TOUR ON WEB SITE ASSIGNMENTS
Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, said he talked with Mike Smith, Centerville’s GIS Specialist, about putting pictures of points of interest along the trails on a trails map that could allow the public to take a virtual hike on the City web site. This would allow a person to click on a trail and view points of interests as if they were actually hiking on the trail. A virtual tour of the trails in Farmington was viewed on Google Earth, and the Committee agreed they would like this same virtual map tour of Centerville’s trails on their web site. Deuel Creek will be the trail they will work on first, and Committee members were asked to bring the points of interest they would like included on the map to the next meeting. Mark Austin said he would contact Royce Allen, who has already gathered a lot of information and pictures, to help with the new web-site, trails map.
GOALS TO REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL
Chair Cox referred to the email that was sent from Steve Thacker on goals for the Trails Committee for the coming fiscal year. These goals will be discussed at the next meeting when the other Committee members are in attendance.
Bruce Cox reported the Frontage Road will be striped in July or August of this year. Mark Austin asked if it is possible to have the speed limit lowered and bike lanes painted on the Frontage Road at the same time. This item will be presented before the City Council.
The next Trails Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the conference room at the Public Works Building.
At 8:45 p.m., the Trails Committee meeting was adjourned.
