MINUTES REVIEW AND APPROVAL

Minutes of the April 1, 2010 Trails Committee meeting minutes were reviewed. Shari Meyer made a motion to accept the minutes as amended. Matt Johnson seconded the motion, which was passed by unanimous vote (7-0).

SPRING HIKES

Julie Creer and Lee Vanhille reported there were 31 participants on the Deuel Creek hike on April 17th.  This was a difficult hike for some elderly women who said they would not have done the hike if they knew how hard it was. Mark Austin reported on the Parrish Creek hike there were 23 participants on April 17 and 41 participants on May 1st.  There were seven participants on the Deuel Creek hike on May 1st, which was a rainy day. The Committee agreed the hikes were successful, and the hikes will be continued on an annual basis.  When the hikes are advertised in the future, the length and difficulty of the hike will be published ahead of time. The next hike, Parrish Creek, is scheduled for September 25th at 8:00 a.m. This hike will go to Skyline Drive.

FORD CANYON TRAIL UPDATE

Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, reported the County and City Council approved the easement for the Ford Canyon Trail.  This will allow the fence to be taken down that is across the gate, and signage will now be posted on the gate giving directions for the trail.

FUN RIDE ASSIGNMENTS

Denise Cox reported she has 80 ice cream coupons from Dairy Queen for the Family Fun Bike Ride on May 8th  beginning at the LDS Church on 400 West and 690 North. Wal-Mart declined to participate in donating for this event. Advertising banners have been displayed at Founders Park, Smoot Park, and the LDS Church parking where the event will begin.

Sam Olson said he spoke with Bountiful Bicycle, and they will not be able to participate in this event. Officer Litster said the Centerville Police Department will give a short speech on bike safety rules for the road.  Trails Committee members will wear their yellow hike shirts, and will be stationed at Chase Lane, Jennings Lane, and 2025 North. Residents living along 400 West will receive a reversed recorded 911 message from Lieutenant Child informing them of this event, and to be aware of backing out of their driveway during this time.

MISCELLANEOUS

Denise Cox attended the Davis County Trails meeting today, and she reported a grant was applied for to do striping of bike lanes throughout Davis County, but the grant was denied. The County said they will continue to apply for this grant in the future.

Julie Creer said she has had several people ask her for Centerville trail maps.  Denise Cox said trail maps will be distributed at the bike event, and then a new more detailed map of the trails in Centerville will be made for public distribution.

Sam Olson reported the South Davis Recreation Center has the bike trails in Bountiful on Google Earth.  He suggested having the Centerville hiking trails posted on Google Earth.

NEXT MEETING

The next Trails Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Public Works building.  It is hoped that George Chipman will be able to attend this meeting to discuss maps and Farmington’s Trail Chief program, and, therefore, the time of the meeting may be changed to 6:00 p.m.

Bruce Cox reported that Sherri Lindstrom asked the City Council to review Royce Allen’s book on the history of Centerville that he would like published. The City Council suggested having the book at the 4th of July festivities to see if people are interested in it and if there is enough of a demand for the book to be published.

ADJOURN

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
