Chair Denise Cox made a motion to approve the August 26, 2010 Trails Committee meeting minutes as amended. Shari Meyer seconded the motion, which was passed by unanimous vote (4-0). Shari Meyer and Julie Creer abstained from voting, as they were not present at that meeting.

REPORT ON SEPTEMBER 25TH HIKE

Matt Johnson, Mark Austin, and Denise Cox attended the City sponsored hike on September 25th to Skyline Drive.  There were five other people in attendance, besides the three Committee members on the hike.  The Committee agreed if the hike is held every year, perhaps more people will be in attendance.  It was reported that Reading Elementary had a fun run that day, and there was also a mock earthquake disaster in Centerville, which perhaps was the reason for the low attendance on the hike.

REPORT ON VOLUNTEER TRAIL PROJECTS COMPLETED AND PLANNED

Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, reported that Ethan Overbough was going to line the Ford Canyon Trail with rocks and grind a fallen tree into wood chips and place them along the Ford Canyon Trail for his Eagle Scout Project.  There was also another young man who wanted to do a trail project for his Eagle Scout Project.  He was going to clean up the east part of the trail and put a turn around sign on the east side of the second bridge. He got confused and ended up cutting up and removing the tree that was meant to be ground up for wood chips on the trail by Ethan Overbough.  He lined the trail with rocks and tree branches. Mr. Cox said Ethan Overbough will remove some Cottonwood trees at the Freedom Hills Park as his Eagle Scout Project. Ian Harr is part of a special needs scout troop who is confined to a wheel chair.  Ian and the special needs scout troop stained seven trail kiosks on the trailheads for his Eagle Scout Project. The glass in the kiosks that has been broken by vandals will be replaced by the City.

BUDGET UPDATE - $35,000 BALANCE ($510 INSERT COST)

Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, reported $35,000 is currently remaining from the $50,000 Trails Committee Fund.  He stated that $510 will be spent for the insert that will be sent in the October City Newsletter advertising Royce Allen’s book.  This money is from the General Fund that is carried over from the previous fiscal year. There is the possibility of more money in the future with the new Larry Miller movie theater development and the Pineae housing development.

DISCUSS NEW TRAILS MAP AND POINTS OF INTEREST

Denise Cox reported Davis County is working on a County Trails Map that can be viewed on www.conceptmarketplace.com.  The location and points of interest on Centerville’s trails will need to be identified and submitted to Scott Hess at Davis County. This project will be worked on in detail at the next meeting.  Mike Smith, GIS employee, will be asked to attend the next meeting and help with this project.

At 8:33 p.m., Shari Meyer was excused from the meeting.

DISCUSS TRAILS COMMITTEE MISSION STATEMENT

Sam Olson discussed this item at the last meeting, but it will be postponed for discussion until the January 2011 meeting.

ANNNUAL “COMMUNITY INFORMATION GUIDE”

Bruce Cox reported the Trails Committee will need to verify the information that is in the Community Information Guide and submit any information that should be printed for this guide book to Lisa Summers. Lee Vanhille suggested a hike take place on the Deuel Creek trail sometime this January or February. A date will be chosen for the winter hike at the next meeting.

OTHER DISCUSSION ITEMS

Denise Cox reported she attended a meeting today with the Davis County Trails Committee.  She said a hike took place recently that was hosted by Layton City that began in Layton by the “castle house” and ended at the water tank.  Bret Milburn, Davis County Commissioner, asked that each city in the county take a turn in hosting a hike in their city. The Committee discussed having the September hike be Centerville’s sponsored hike, which would hopefully attract more people from throughout the County.

The Committee discussed placing a metal sign where the Parrish Canyon Trail hike meets Skyline Drive that would direct hikers onto the trail.  Mr. Cox will see if two signs for the Parrish Canyon Trail can be made and installed before the snow begins.

Shari Meyer suggested that next year a Haunted Halloween Hike be held in conjunction with the Halloween festivities at Founders Park.

NEXT MEETING

The next Trails Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.  There will not be a Trails Committee meeting held in December.

ADJOURN

The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m.
