Stream Cleanup Day
Wednesday, April 06, 2005 - 12:54 PM
On February 17, 2005 Mayor Michael Deamer sent a letter to community representatives setting aside April 9, 2005 as a citywide stream clean-up day. Mayor Deamer requested that the neighborhood emergency coordinators be utilized in the planning and coordination of this event. In the letter Mayor Deamer expressed the desire for a "large scale citizen involvement". With the heavy snow accumulation it is expected that the stream flows this spring will be heavy and clearing the channels will help water to stay within the banks of the streams.

Centerville City Emergency Management and the Public works department have been planning this clean-up with the neighborhood networks. The city is divided into four "districts" and each district is divided into multiple "areas". Each District has a designated representative and an alternate. The district representatives have been tasked to coordinate the clean up of their assigned drainages. The city has provided maps to each district showing the sections of the streams for which that district will be responsible to clean. Volunteers from the districts will be coordinated through the district and area representatives. The Centerville Public Works department will help where needed for removal of debris and the Davis County Public Works will follow up on Monday to finish the removal.

This clean up will also provide the Emergency Management component of the city to exercise the communication abilities between the city and the neighborhood networks. The ability to communicate will be critical in the event of a natural or manmade disaster. The City has two separate Emergency Operations Centers (EOC). There is one EOC in the city hall building and the other in the public works building both of which have communication ability. The EOC in both buildings will be utilized to test their ability to effectively communicate.

The clean-up is to start on Saturday April 9th at 9am. The volunteers are asked to contact their area representatives or district leaders for information on meeting points and work assignments. For further information go to www.centervilleut.net or call Lt. Paul Child at Centerville Police or Dustin Lewis at the public works department.
