MAIN STREET PLANNING PROJECT
Cory Snyder, Community Development Director, introduced Suzie Petheram and Laura Hanson, consultants for Cooper Roberts Simonsen Associates, who conducted the various phases of the Main Street Planning Project. Ms. Petheram explained that various Main Street property and business owners were involved in the initial stages of the Main Street Planning Project. Guiding principles evolved during the discussions at the initial meetings which included preservation of the historic character, maintaining the small town atmosphere, providing a gathering space, and establishing Main Street as the cultural heart of the community. The mission statement is, “Bring Main Street into focus as the cultural, civic and community heart of the city.” The focus area that was studied included Main Street from Pages Lane on the south to Parrish Lane on the north. This area was closely walked and studied to consider problems and assets, as well as potential redevelopment areas.
The Master Plan consists of five main components labeled as districts. The districts are the Gateway District, Civic District, Main Street District, Residential Boulevard District and Mixed-Use District. This study also looked at the mobility of the area regarding transit needs, traffic calming strategies, parking and pedestrian amenities. Laura reviewed recommendations regarding building style, amenities, traffic calming measures, pedestrian crosswalks and setback recommendations for each of the five districts. Other recommendations included business entry doors off of the street, transit stops, benches, sidewalks and landscaping that would tie the entire area together. Ms. Petheram and Ms. Hanson responded to questions and comments from the City Council and Planning Commission.
At 6:57 p.m. the meeting was adjourned.
