MINUTES REVIEW AND APPROVAL
The minutes of the Trails Committee meeting held October 11, 2007 were reviewed and amended. Mark Austin made a motion to approve the minutes as amended. The motion was seconded by Stephanie Wheatley and passed by unanimous vote (4-0).
POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS
Trails Committee members will continue to ask individuals to join the committee. Another article will be placed in the next City newsletter asking for volunteers.
UPDATE – Porter-Walton Open House Celebration
The open house has been postponed until spring 2008. This will allow time for the installation of a new playground, additional landscaping, and possibly more trail.
TRAIL SIGNAGE
Stephanie Wheatley distributed the schematics of the trailhead kiosks (pressure treated redwood) used by Farmington City. Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, distributed some catalogs showing kiosks made of recycled plastic that can be purchased. The Committee agreed on the redwood kiosks; they are significantly cheaper and provide a service opportunity for volunteers.
The Committee agreed they would like the first few kiosks to be installed at the Ford Canyon Trailhead, the Deuel Creek Trailhead, and the Freedom Hills Park switchback trailhead.
FORD CANYON TRAIL
Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, reported that a Boy Scout has contacted him and agreed to install the lower bridge on the Ford Canyon Trail for his Eagle project. The young man is currently working on plans for the bridge and will submit those for final approval by the City prior to construction in the spring. The young man has also agreed to do some minor clearing of the trail where possible.
Mr. Cox reminded the Committee that this will be a loop trail with a bridge at the top and bottom of the creek. He explained that the trail still needs to be blazed in order to get the necessary equipment in to construct the upper bridge. This may be something the Committee would like to review further and plan for in the spring.
The Committee agreed to hike this trail again at the first of the year (2008) to identify what needs to be done. Perhaps there are portions of the work that can be done by volunteers.
FRONTAGE ROAD BIKE LANES
Steve Thacker, City Manager, distributed a letter sent to Max Forbush, Farmington City Manager, stating Centerville’s proposal to install bike lanes on the Frontage Road. Farmington City has scheduled this item for discussion with their Planning Commission. The City is still waiting a response.
Mr. Thacker distributed a letter sent to the Utah LTAP Center requesting a safety audit of the Frontage Road with regard to bike lanes. The City is still waiting a response.
Mr. Thacker provided contact information for the president of the Utah Bicycle Coalition. He suggested someone from the Committee contact the Coalition and ask their opinion on the best route for bike lanes through Centerville. Stephanie Wheatley agreed to take this assignment.
NEXT MEETING
The next regularly scheduled Trails Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m.
