PRESENTATON FROM WASATCH FRONT REGIONAL COUNCIL
Doug Hattery, Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) representative, was present to explain the Transportation Long-Range Planning process and the five-year spending plan for road projects. The WFRC was established in 1973, pursuant to federal requirements to help metropolitan areas of 50,000 or greater develop long-term transportation goals and planning programs. The WFRC consists of 18 voting members and 7 non-voting members. The voting members are all elected local officials, 8 from Salt Lake County, 4 each from Davis and Weber counties and 1 each from Morgan and Toole counties. Mr. Hattery reviewed key goals and projects the WFRC has identified for the 2007-2030 Regional Transportation Plan. This plan is updated regularly; the next update for this plan is scheduled for 2011. Some of the major projects in the plan include completion of the Legacy Parkway, emphasis on east/west arterials, Mountain View Corridor Freeway, preservation of right-of-way, completion of commuter rail and expansion of the TRAX line.
Mr. Hattery reviewed the application process and timelines to apply for federal transportation funding. The City recently applied for some of this funding. The WFRC is always considering future growth needs and the need for the preservation of future roadway corridors. Air quality and other environmental concerns are always being studied and the WFRC will continue to try to address and comply with the changing environmental standards. Mr. Hattery showed some maps of proposed future transportation options. Some cities have adopted the WFRC growth principles and adopted certain zoning changes and transit related plans to reduce congestion within their cities. Mr. Hattery responded to questions and comments from the Council.
At 7:15 p.m. the meeting was adjourned.
