Minutes of the Centerville City Trails Committee meeting held March 13, 2008 in the Centerville City Business Office Conference Room, 250 North Main, Centerville, Utah, was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Stephanie Wheatley.

MINUTES REVIEW AND APPROVAL

The minutes of the Centerville City Trails Committee meeting held February 13, 2008 were reviewed.  Mark Day made a motion to approve the minutes as written. The motion was seconded by Wendy Higgins and passed by unanimous vote (5-0).

Report from Mark Austin about community hiking activities

Mark Austin reported there are 80 people who are planning to go on the City sponsored hikes.  He said with this many people planning to attend; the hikes should be coordinated to start at different intervals. April 19th is the first scheduled hike at the Freedom Hills Park, and there will be hikes each Saturday for four weeks thereafter. Mr. Austin asked Committee members to volunteer to help at the hikes, and maps of the parks and trails will be printed for the hikes and they will be distributed at the next meeting.  Michael Higgins said he will provide dog waste bags that will be distributed to dog owners who bring their dogs on the hikes.  Steve Thacker said he will verify with the City Attorney if liability forms should be signed before people can go on the hikes. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Porter-Walton Park ribbon-cutting event

Stephanie Wheatley reported the Porter-Walton Park ribbon cutting event will be on May 1st, at 6:30 p.m.  It is estimated there will be around 300 people in attendance, and Committee members will be responsible to set-up for this event and help with the food. A display sponsored by the Trails Committee, and a map of the trails system in Centerville will be displayed.

There will be a trail loop walk/run of one-half mile after the ribbon cutting. Wendy Higgins will work on obtaining T-Shirts for the Trails Committee members to wear on the City sponsored hikes and other City events. 

Discuss results of recent community survey

Steve Thacker distributed the results of the recent community survey on Parks, Recreation and Trails. The Trails Committee discussed the highlights of the survey.

Completion of Trails Section of General Plan, including map of proposed trails

Wendy Higgins said she has talked with Mike Smith and a proposed trail plan must be made to go in the General Plan, including a map of the proposed trails. The Trails Committee discussed the proposed trails map that will be included in the General Plan. Mr. Thacker said he will formulate an introduction of the goals and objectives of the Trails Committee that will be presented to the Planning Commission and City Council. Mr. Thacker said there is no definite answer at this time if there will be a trail on the south side of Porter Lane.    

Ford Canyon Trail construction plan

The Trails Committee viewed and aerial map of the Ford Canyon area and where the Ford Canyon Trail will be. The Committee agreed they need to take a field trip to this area before construction plans can begin. 

Trail Kiosks and signage

Steve Thacker a Boy Scout will be doing trail kiosks for his Eagle Scout project.  Mr. Thacker said the Boy Scout has the option of doing one kiosk and installing it, or assembling several kiosks but not installing them.  Stephanie Wheatley suggested placing trail markers on the trails to show the distance walked.

Continuation of discussion about bike lanes

This item will be discussed at the next meeting.

Plan field trip to see Legacy Parkway trailhead sites and general tour of City’s trails

The Trails Committee agreed to go on a field trip to the trailhead sites and trails to acquaint Committee members of these areas.  The field trip will be held on May 8, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.

NEXT MEETING

The next Trails Committee meeting will be held on April 10, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
