REPORT ON REMOVAL OF CABINETS AND APPLIANCES FROM THE KITCHEN

Melissa Hogan, Museum Director, reported the kitchen cabinets have been removed with the help of City employees. When they were being taken off the north wall, the bottom sections of the cabinets were not in good condition, and it was decided they could not be sold and they were disposed of. The dishwasher and refrigerator were sold, with the money being deposited in the Whitaker Museum Fund.  Two signs have been ordered to hold a rummage sale for other items from the Museum.  Melissa also reported that when the cabinets were removed, there was major water damage on the wall where the cabinets were.

APPROVED CHANGE OF LANDEN CARLSON’S EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

Paul Thomas Smith, Chair, reported that his relative, Landen Carlson, was originally going to work on the kitchen for his Eagle Scout project, but it has been decided he will work on the walls in the upstairs bedroom.  The work that Landen will do would cost $2,500 if it was done professionally. Pictures will be taken of the restoration work while it is in progress. Mr. Smith displayed a picture that his daughter painted of the original Whitaker Museum.

REPORT ON THE DONATION OF DISPLAY CASES AND HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS FROM LDS HOSPITAL

Melissa Hogan reported she talked with Diane Tingey Knoor who donated some historical artifacts from LDS Hospital to the Museum. Some of the artifacts are an original wood butter churner, a rug beater, and a Pony Express satchel.

MAY 7TH DUP MEETING ON THE MUSEUM GROUNDS

Melissa Hogan reported the DUP Jubilee meeting will be held tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.  Paul Thomas Smith will be talking at this event, and he will be giving a presentation on the restoration projects that will be taking place at the Museum.

MAY 23RD PREMIERE OF THE THOMAS WHITAKER DVD

Paul Thomas Smith reported the premiere of the Thomas Whitaker DVD will be on May 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at the LDS Church on 100 East (Rowland Way) and 600 North. Mr. Smith said he is hoping to have Bruce Newbold do the narrating for this DVD.

ROOF REPLACEMENT CRISIS

Melissa Hogan reported it was originally thought the upstairs toilet and pipe were leaking, but it has been discovered the roof is leaking, and it must be repaired immediately. At the City Council meeting last night, Mayor Russell and Steve Thacker told Melissa Hogan to get three bids to repair the roof. The bids will be for labor only, as the City will pay for the cedar shingles. Bids will be obtained from Whitaker Roofing, Greg Miles Roofing, R & R Roofing, Lloyd’s Quality Roofing, and Rick Bangerter Roofing. If the cost of repairing the roof is under $25,000, it is hoped that any money that is saved could be put into the Whitaker Museum Fund.

OTHER BUSINESS

Lawrence Wright, City Council Liaison, reported on June 2, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall there will be an open house and public hearing on the City budget.  The City Council asked that there be a display from the Whitaker Museum to inform citizens on what is happening at the Museum.

On May 28th, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held for the new Davis Cultural Arts Center.  The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m., and Board members are invited to attend.

Mr. Wright apologized for the interruption at the City Council/Museum Board work session last night by the County Commissioners. He said the City Council commended the Whitaker Museum Board for their work, and it is felt the Policies and Procedures Manuel will be approved. Mr. Wright suggested a price list be made on the items that are needed at the Museum.

Mr. Wright said he suggested to the City they sell LDS Church well water, which is the second highest in quality in the State of Utah. Mr. Smith said a picture of Thomas Whitaker could be placed on the water bottles and marketed by the Museum Board.  Money received would go into the Whitaker Museum Fund.

Melissa Hogan reported the final report of the Utah State Historical Records Advisory Board Grant has been received, and they want it advertised that they funded it. Melissa said she created a Twitter Page web site at twitter.com/thewhitaker about this grant  It was suggested a docent be found who could market the items for sale at the Museum and raise money for the Whitaker Museum Fund.
