Chair Smith made a motion to approve the May 6, 2009 Whitaker Museum Board meeting minutes as amended. Doug Romney seconded the motion, which was passed by unanimous vote (4-0).

REVIEW OF LANDEN CARLSON’S EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT COMPLETED SATURDAY, MAY 30TH

Chair Smith reported that seven Boy Scouts worked at the Museum on May 30th for five hours in the kitchen and bedrooms.  They removed the linoleum from the kitchen, repaired the cracks in the walls and removed wallpaper in the bedrooms.  A letter of appreciation will be given to Landen Carlson and the other Boy Scouts for their work at the Museum.  It is estimated that $2,500 was saved by the work that was performed by these young men.

REROOFING THE MUSEUM AND PROPOSED TREE REMOVAL

Melissa Hogan reported she took a purchase order in the amount of $6,233 worth of materials to Roofer’s Supply, which purchase included 84 bundles of shingles, and 63 sheets of pressed wood board. The materials were given at cost, and the money that was saved was used to remove a tree on the north side of the Museum.

Melissa reported there is a cottonwood tree on the southeast side of the property near the garage that should also be removed, as it was struck by lightening many years ago and it has rotted inside. Bruce Cox told Melissa he will obtain a bid to have this tree removed.

PURCHASE OF A 55-INCH TELEVISION SET AND DVD PLAYER

Chair Smith reported that he and Melissa Hogan purchased a 55-inch television screen and DVD player at a cost of $1,814 from COSTCO to show the Thomas Whitaker documentary.

PROPOSED STRUCTURAL CHANGES AT THE WHITAKER MUSEUM

Chair Smith and Melissa Hogan suggested to the Board that the wooden portion of the Museum that adjoins the garage be removed. Melissa Hogan reported the shed has been condemned by the South Davis Metro Fire Agency, and the Fire Marshal said it is not to be occupied with people or artifacts. It was agreed by the Board to have the shed removed after the roofing is completed, which will hopefully be by August 1, 2009.  Chair Smith proposed that a plan be developed and presented to the City Council that requests permission to have the wooden shed removed this summer by volunteer labor.

Chair Smith made a motion to proceed with a proposal to the City Council that the wooden shed be removed using volunteer labor.  Doug Romney seconded the motion, which was passed by unanimous vote (4-0).

Dean Layton suggested the entire cinderblock garage that was built in the 1960s be removed at the same time as the shed by professionals.  Mr. Layton said he will obtain an evaluation on what would be involved to remove the garage, and how much it will cost.

OTHER BUSINESS

Chair Smith reported that Richard Davis has asked to be removed from the South Davis Museum Board, because he must travel out of town frequently.  However, he said he would like to continue to be on the Whitaker Museum Board.  Mr. Smith said the City Council is requesting the Whitaker Museum Board recommend names of individuals who could take Mr. Davis’ place on the South Davis Museum Board.  After discussion, the Board agreed that Lawrence Wright, City Council Liaison, should be on the South Davis Museum Board.

Chair Smith reported the City Council approved the Whitaker Museum Board budget at their June 2nd meeting, and they are in support of what the Board is doing at the Whitaker Museum.

At 6:55 p.m., Dean Layton was excused from the meeting.

SHOWING OF THE WHITAKER DOCUMENTARY

The Whitaker Museum Board viewed the Whitaker Documentary that Chair Smith produced. Bruce Newbold narrated the documentary. Mr. Smith said there were many descendents of Thomas Whitaker who were at the premiere showing of the DVD on May 23rd, and there were 36 orders of the DVD requested.

NEXT MEETING

There will not be a meeting for the Whitaker Museum Board held in July unless a special meeting is needed. The next scheduled Board meeting will be on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.
