The Great Utah Shake Out

The Great Utah Shake Out

We all must get better prepared for major earthquake, and practice how to protect ourselves when they happen.  The purpose of the ShakeOut is to help people and organizations do both.

There are many ways for individulals, businesses, schools, faith-based organizations, community groups, scouts, and others to participate in the ShakeOut, to get prepared for earthquakes, and to share what you're doing with others so they can do the same.

Centerville City will be participating in this event and we encourage Individuals, Families, Schools, Businesses, CERT Groups, Neighborhood Groups etc. to also participate.  To register go to www.shakeout.org/utah/howtoparticipate

Having trouble finding something? Here are a few of our frequently asked questions. Can't find it here? Contact us.

What do I have to do to participate in the ShakeOut?
Where is the ShakeOut being held?
What will happen on April 17?

The ShakeOut Drill is scheduled for 10:15 AM on April 17, 2012. This means that wherever you are at that moment—at home, at work, at school, anywhere—you should Drop, Cover, and Hold On as if there were a major earthquake occurring at that very moment, and stay in this position for at least 60 seconds. There will not be any freeway closures, power outages, or other simulated effects of the hypothetical earthquake, unless your local government or utility company specifically notifies you about something of this nature. The ShakeOut is not something you need to leave work to participate in—in fact, participating at work is encouraged! Businesses, organizations, schools, and government agencies can register and have their employees practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On or have a more extensive emergency drill.

The main goal of the ShakeOut is to get Utahns prepared for major earthquakes, so use the ShakeOut as an opportunity to learn what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. Visit http://www.earthquakecountry.info/roots/seven_steps.html for tips on how to prepare, survive, and recover.

Anyone in Utah can participate, from a single individual at their home to a major company at the office. Talk to your coworkers, neighbors and friends about the ShakeOut and encourage their participation.
Sign up for free at www.ShakeOut.org/Utah/register to be counted in the ShakeOut Drill, get email updates, and more.

How long does the ShakeOut last?

Most people will practice how they will Drop, Cover, and Hold On during a large earthquake, which only takes about one minute. Some organizations conduct more extensive drills, which may take an hour or even all day. How to participate is your choice.

I’ve heard about alternate ways of staying safe during an earthquake, like the "Triangle of Life" concept. What should I do?

The safest thing to do during an earthquake is "Drop, Cover, and Hold On," as described at http://www.earthquakecountry.info/dropcoverholdon. This special report describes how the "Triangle of Life" is promoted with greatly exaggerated or wrong information, and is potentially very dangerous.
