Centerville City operates under the "Six-Member Council Form of Government" option allowed in State law. The powers of municipal government under this form are vested in a Council consisting of six elected officials—five Council Members and the Mayor. The Mayor is a nonvoting member of the Council, except in limited circumstances. The Mayor is the chair of the Council and presides at all Council meetings. The Council is the legislative body of the City, exercising its legislative powers and duties through the adoption of ordinances and resolutions.
The Mayor is the chief executive officer. However, some of the Mayor’s powers and duties can be transferred to a City Manager, as is the case in Centerville. This delegation of duties to a City Manager has been done by the adoption of an ordinance by the City Council.
