Re: Identity Theft

On April 2, 2011, at 10:22 am officers from Centerville were notified by Kaysville Police of an unlawful use of a credit card at the Target in Centerville. The credit card had just been taken from a vehicle burglary in Kaysville, and the owner called her bank who advised of the unlawful use in Centerville.  An officer from Centerville Police responded to Target, and with the help of Target Asset Protection personnel they quickly obtained a physical description of the male and female suspects and their vehicle. Another Centerville officer located the suspects as they were leaving 7-Eleven going towards the freeway.  The suspects had also been to Kohl’s and Chevron Top Stop using the stolen card to obtain property and attempting to gain cash at an ATM but were declined by the machine.

Moses Smith (34) and Brittany Benson (19), both from West Valley, were arrested on the unlawful use of a credit card which was stolen in Kaysville.  Further investigation revealed several other stolen credit cards and identifications, a pipe containing methamphetamine, merchandise obtained from the stolen credit cards, stolen wallets, and cash.  The suspects are believed to have been involved in multiple vehicle burglaries, identity thefts, and credit fraud cases throughout Davis County.

On Monday April 4, 2011, the Davis County Attorney’s office filed charges on both Smith and Benson. The charges include two counts of third-degree felony unlawful acquisition/possession of a financial card, one count of third-degree identity fraud, one count of third-degree felony possession of methamphetamine, one count of vehicle burglary class A, three counts of class B misdemeanor unlawful use of a financial transaction card, one count of class B misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and one count of a class B misdemeanor theft.

Centerville and other Davis County area detectives are following up on several other cases that may also be linked to these individuals.
