3 Fire Fighters Injured During Training
On November 17, 2011 at 9:17 pm a Farmington City fire fighting apparatus rolled down a steep embankment injuring three Farmington firefighters, one with serious head injuries. Farmington City Fire Department firefighters were engaged in “Basic Wild-land Fire Interface” training on an unimproved “jeep road” called the “Firebreak” road above Centerville City near the border with Farmington. The three injured firefighters were riding in a “Tender” six wheel drive fire truck weighing 22,500 lbs when it went off the road and rolled down a steep embankment. The fire truck rolled three or four times. The fire truck was previously a military vehicle purchased by Farmington City and modified to function as a wild-land Tender fire fighting vehicle.
Injured in this mishap were a Fire Captain who works full time for Farmington Fire, a part time Fire Captain, and a volunteer Fire Fighter Paramedic. One firefighter was flown by AirMed to IMC hospital with serious head injuries. The other two firefighters were taken by ground ambulance to Ogden Regional and McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden. At this time, I do not have conditions on the two taken by ambulance other than the injuries were not as serious as the firefighter who was flown to IHC. All three firefighters were restrained in the vehicle, but two of them were ejected.
The accident was reported by other Farmington firefighters who were in the area and participating with this training exercise. Farmington Fire Chief Guido Smith was on scene and took over command of the rescue operation. Chief Smith has asked that we don’t release the names of the injured firefighters at this time.
This accident remains under investigation by Centerville Police Department. The truck remains at the bottom of the gully where it came to rest until it can be recovered in the daylight tomorrow. A Centerville police officer will remain at the crash site all night to preserve the crash site. Utah Highway Patrol has been requested to assist tomorrow in the investigation with a remote controlled helicopter to take overhead pictures.
