3 Fire Fighters Injured During Training
Updated November 17, 2011 at 1100
On November 17, 2011, at 9:17 pm, a Farmington City fire fighting apparatus rolled down a steep embankment injuring three Farmington Fire Fighters, one with a head injury. Farmington City Fire Department Firefighters were engaged in basic wild land fire vehicle operation training on an unimproved “jeep road” called the “Firebreak” road above Centerville City near the border with Farmington. The three injured firefighters were riding in a “Tender” six wheel drive fire truck weighing 22,500 lbs when it went off the road and rolled down a steep embankment one or two times. The fire truck was previously a military vehicle purchased by Farmington City and modified to function as a wild-land Tender fire fighting vehicle.
Injured in this mishap were fulltime Firefighter and Fire Captain Rick Wesche, part time Firefighter Captain Jed Done, and volunteer Fire Fighter Paramedic Jay Burnam. Captain Done was flown by AirMed to the Intermountain Medical Center with head injuries. He is currently able to talk and is making significant improvement. The other two firefighters were taken by ground ambulance to the two hospitals; Captain Wesche was taken to IMC in Murray with less serious injuries, and firefighter Jay Burnam was taken to Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful with minor injuries. Both Captain Wesche and Firefighter Jay Burnam have been released within the last couple of hours. All three firefighters were restrained with lap belts in the vehicle, but two fire fighters were ejected and the cab of the truck suffered significant damage.
The accident was reported by other Farmington firefighters who were in the area and participating with this training exercise. Farmington Fire Chief Guido Smith was on scene and took over command of the rescue operation. Chief Smith was not involved in the roll over.
Currently Utah Highway Patrol and Centerville Police are investigating this crash. The truck remains at the bottom of the gully where it came to rest until it can be recovered which will likely by this afternoon.
Responding units included personnel from South Davis Metro Fire, Davis County Sheriff’s Office, Farmington Fire, Farmington Police, and Centerville Police.
