MINUTES REVIEW AND APPROVAL

The minutes of the Parks and Recreation Committee meeting held November 15, 2007 were reviewed. Steven Blais made a motion to approve the minutes as written. The motion was seconded by Peyton Smith and passed by unanimous vote (5-0).

ENTERTAINMENT IN THE PARK – City Council’s reaction to the proposed plan

Peyton Smith reported that he and Kevin Merrill presented the proposal for entertainment in the park to the City Council. The Council was receptive and excited about the proposal. He said the City Council granted the Parks and Recreation Committee $10,000 to host these activities in 2008. In addition to the $10,000 budget, the City Council will also allow the purchase of an appropriate sound system. The City Council encouraged the Parks and Recreation Committee to continue to move forward with this plan.

Mr. Smith reported that he has spoken with a representative from South Jordon regarding movies in the park. He discussed the logistics of hosting such an event and reviewed with the Committee possible costs. He said he would like to get an entertainment committee established sometime in January/February and start working on details. He said he will have another article put in the next City newsletter asking for volunteers. He also invited any members of the Parks and Recreation Committee to help, that may be interested.

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

The Parks and Recreation Committee reviewed each company’s (Gametime and Playcraft) proposal for playground equipment in three of the City’s parks (Porter-Walton, Freedom Hills, and Smoot). Steve Blais distributed a cost breakdown of each proposal, including equipment, shipping, installation, and pad. The Committee agreed that Gametime is the company they would like to do business with. Gametime handles their own installation, can provide a greater discount, already has a working relationship with the City’s Parks and Recreation Director, and has proven that they are able to service future needs.

The Committee further reviewed Gametime’s proposal for each of the three parks. Overall, the Committee agreed with each design, but would like Taft Egan (representative) to use his expertise in recommending a few changes. The Committee said they would like to see another climbing feature on the Porter-Walton playground and an additional seat adjacent to the one already proposed at the base of one of the posts. The Committee would also like to add a toddler swing just east of the play lot, and perhaps a larger set of swings (for older children) elsewhere in the park (possibly the south east area between the two pavilions). The Committee also agreed that the GTnet (another stand alone feature) may be appropriate in either the Porter-Walton Park or Smoot Park.

The Committee agreed they would like a zip line to replace the chain link climbing feature on the Smoot Park playground. The Committee would also like to see a recommendation for park benches around the perimeter of the Smoot Park playground and the Freedom Hills Park playground.

Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, said he will report the Committee’s desires to Mr. Taft and bring a response to the next meeting. He also suggested the Committee ask the City Council to earmark any funds not used at this time for future playground equipment. The Committee agreed.

NEXT MEETING

The next Parks and Recreation Committee meeting will be held in January 2008.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
