Water Conservation Project at Porter Lane Well
Site Map | Before & After Pictures

In 1995 Centerville City purchased the Porter Lane Well site from the Deuel Creek Irrigation Company to be used as an additional source for the City’s culinary water supply.  As development in the area transformed from rural to more urban, the City decided to landscape and beautify the well site area.  It was determined that the landscaping would not only beautify the neighborhood, but could also become a demonstration garden to help residents learn more about “water-wise” plants that they could use to landscape around their own homes.

Jerry Goodspeed, from the Utah State University Extension Service, helped to design the site to reflect a “native garden” appearance.  His design used many plants native to the area which required less water and which would provide various colors throughout each season.  This site uses about 1/3 of the water that would have been needed to maintain the traditional landscaping of sod and trees that are so prevalent in Utah communities.

After the design was complete, the City cleaned out all the brush, leveled the ground, and installed a sprinkler system, including drip irrigation for many of the plants. A rain sensor was installed so that the irrigation system will not be watering while it is raining or has been raining.  The City then planted the trees and plants, and placed bark in the walkways. The trees under the power lines are approved by Utah Power and Light.  Three different types of turf have been planted which use less water than traditional grass.  All three have been in for a while and are doing very well.

We hope that all Centerville residents will continue to conserve water by using more water wise plants in their landscaping.  Please feel free to visit the site and view the many types of water wise plants that have been incorporated into the landscaping.  To view a site map with plant names and pictures click here.

Special thanks to Jerry Goodspeed and the Utah State University Extension Service for designing the landscape plan, Pack Turf Farm for donating the various types of turf, and the many others that made this project successful.
